The Hot Baby Affair

24 07 2008

A rather dramatic story came out of France yesterday that surprisingly failed to make American news (not even the drama-hungry tabloids!).

If you had checked the French news yesterday, you would’ve seen at least one headline about what I like to call the “hot baby Zoe affair” (I know what you perverts are thinking!). Because it was all over the place, I can’t just give you one link…

But this is one that is rather dramatic: Hot Baby Zoe Affair

The chronology of the affair is as follows:

  • 8:30AM— the father of baby Zoe parked his car, as usual, in the factory parking lot, where he works. Unbeknownst to him, baby Zoe was still in the back seat, sitting quietly. The father forgot to drop her off at her babysitter’s house after dropping his 5 year-old son off at preschool.
  • 10:00AM— the babysitter, worried because Zoe was never dropped off, left a message on the family’s home phone, but no one was there to receive it.
  • Around 5:00PM— the father leaves work and gets into the car. He does not realize the dead baby Zoe in the back of the car until he arrives at the preschool, to pick up his son. With the child in his arms, he runs to the neighboring fire station, crying “I’ve killed her! I’ve killed her!”

According to the autopsy that took place yesterday, baby Zoe died of dehydration between 12 and 2 in the afternoon.

Many people are puzzled as to why the father completely forgot his daughter in the car– many people are pointing to stress, but others are saying that is no excuse for irresponsibility.

A fellow employee is quoted as saying:

“At work, everyone is talking about the father. I believe it’s also because people don’t want to talk about the parking lot. Thousands of people pass by there everyday. So one prefers to think about the father’s problems rather than the death of the little girl there, right next to us in the parking lot.”

The name of the father or the family wasn’t revealed for privacy reasons I’m guessing.

And that was the Hot Baby Zoe Affair. The moral of the story? Use protection!
